Employees who have earned vacation credits after July 1st shall be entitled to vacation pay as follows:

Employees who have completed 13 weeks of service with the University and present a doctor’s certificate or certificate from a midwife confirming the pregnancy and probable date of delivery are entitled to a leave of absence of up to 17 weeks.
For employees with one year of service or more, the University will pay 95% of salary during the two week waiting period for Employment Insurance (EI) benefits, and for the next 15 weeks,will pay the difference between EI benefits and 95% of salary, provided that the employee applies for and receives EI benefits.

Employees who have completed 13 weeks of service with the University are entitled to an unpaid parental leave following the birth of the child or the coming of the child into a parent’s custody, care and control for the first time. Both parents are eligible to take a parental leave as follows:
- Up to 35 weeks for birth mothers.
- Up to 37 weeks for all other new parents, such as birth fathers, adoptive parents and same-sex partners.
For employees who take pregnancy leave, parental leave commences at the end of the pregnancy leave or when the baby first comes into custody, care and control of the birth mother.
For other parents, parental leave must commence within the 52 weeks following the baby’s birth or after the child first comes into the custody, care and control of a parent.

Fathers and same-sex parents are granted up to three days’ paid leave of absence, which must be taken within the first month of the birth or adoption of a child.
Short-Term Sick Leave
Full-time employees who have completed 90 working days shall be eligible to be granted sick leave for pay periods of up to 15 weeks during unavoidable absence due to illness or injury not compensable under the provisions of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act.
In each calendar year commencing May 1st, sick leave with pay will be granted in accordance with the following provisions:
after the third period of absence due to illness, no pay will be granted for the first day of sick leave.
after the fourth period of absence due to illness, no pay will be granted for the first two days of sick leave.
after the fifth or any subsequent period of absence due to illness, no pay will be granted for the first three days of sick leave.
Long-Term Disability (LTD)
- Employees who continue to be sick beyond the 15 week period may apply for LTD.
- LTD provides employees with 70 percent of their University salary, up to a maximum insurable salary of $125,000 per annum.
- Once on LTD, premiums for this plan are waived, and participation in the Group Life Insurance Plan and the UT Pension Plan are continued at no cost to the staff member.
Employees will be granted, upon request, a maximum three working days without loss of regular pay in the event of the death of a member of the immediate family or a member of the household, including:
- or ward.
Paid Personal Leave of Absence
Commencing July 1st of each year and subject to operational requirements, employees shall be allowed up to four days’ paid leave of absence. Such leave shall not be used for purposes of extending vacations or the day prior to or following a paid holiday.
Jury and Witness Duty
An employee who is required for jury duty or crown witness service will receive the difference between normal earnings and the payment received for jury duty or crown witness service.
An employee may be granted a leave of absence without pay for valid personal reasons upon applying for and being granted the leave in writing, including requests for any extensions.
Conventions and Seminars
Upon written request and approval, employees may be granted an unpaid leave of absence, without loss of seniority, for no more than two employees at any one time, to attend any authorized Labour Convention or Educational Seminar. Such leaves shall not exceed ten working days per year for each employee to whom such leave is granted.
