Vacation

Each July 1, you are entitled to vacation time and pay based on your earned credits as follows:

Notify your supervisor of your requested vacation time before March 15 each year. The vacation schedule will be posted by April 15. While every effort is made to accommodate individual employee vacation requests, the University reserves the right to determine timing and length of vacation periods during the summer months in a manner that ensures efficient operations.

Pregnancy / Maternity Leave

If you are pregnant, and have been with the University for 13 weeks prior to delivery, you are entitled to a leave of absence up to 17 weeks. You must present a certificate from your doctor or midwife confirming the pregnancy and probable delivery date.

If you have one year of service or more, the University will pay 95% of your salary during the two-week waiting period for Employment Insurance (EI) benefits. For the following 15 weeks, the University will pay the difference between EI benefits and 95% of your salary, provided you successfully receive EI benefits. During pregnancy and maternity leave, full benefits will continue through regular payroll deductions. Contact the Family Care Office for a Maternity Leave kit.

Primary Caregiver / Adoption Leave

After 13 weeks of service with the University, this leave is available to a parent, other than the biological mother, who has the responsibility for primary childcare immediately following the birth of a child, or the arrival of a child into the custody, care and control of a parent.

With one year of service or more, you are eligible for the University Supplemental Unemployment Benefit (SUB), which pays 95% of your regular salary during the two-week waiting period for Employment Insurance (EI) benefits. For the next 11 weeks, the University will pay the difference between EI and up to 95% of your regular salary, provided you successfully receive EI benefits. The balance of the leave, up to 24 weeks, may be taken as unpaid parental leave.

During primary caregiver/adoption leave, your full benefits will continue through regular payroll deductions. Contact theFamily Care Office for a Primary Caregiver/Adoption Leave kit.

Parental Leave

After 13 weeks of service with the University, you are entitled to a parental leave following the birth of a child or the arrival of a child into your custody, care and control. Birth mothers may take 35 weeks of parental leave. All other new parents, such as birth fathers, adoptive parents and same-sex partners, may take up to 37 weeks of parental leave.

If you take pregnancy leave, your parental leave will begin either at the end of the pregnancy leave or when the baby first comes into your custody, care and control.

For other parents, parental leave must start within the 52 weeks following the baby’s birth, or after the child first comes into the custody, care and control of a parent.

If you have one or more years of service, you are eligible for the University Supplemental Unemployment Benefit (SUB), which pays 95% of your regular salary during the two-week waiting period for Employment Insurance (EI). For the next eight weeks, the University will pay the difference between EI and up to 95% of your regular salary, provided you successfully receive EI benefits. During the paid portion of your parental leave, full benefits will continue through regular payroll deductions.

Paternity Leave

Fathers and same-sex parents are granted up to three days paid leave of absence upon the birth or adoption of a child.

Sick Leave

Upon completion of 60 days of employment, you are eligible for paid sick leave up to 15 weeks when the absence is due to unavoidable illness or injury not compensable under Workplace Safety and Insurance Act provisions.

In each year starting July 1, you may receive sick leave with pay according to the following provisions:

  • After the fourth period of absence due to illness, your first day of sick leave will be unpaid
  • After the fifth period of absence due to illness, your first two days of sick leave will be unpaid
  • After the sixth or any subsequent period of absence due to illness, your first three days of sick leave will be unpaid

If you are sick beyond the 15-week period, you may apply for long term disability.

Bereavement Leave

You will be granted up to five days of paid leave in the event of the following deaths:

  • Spouse
  • Same-sex partner
  • Children (including step-children)
  • Grandchildren
  • Parents
  • Parents-in-law
  • Sibling (including step-brother, step-sister)
  • Sister-in-law or brother-in-law
  • Guardian or ward
  • Grandparents
  • Person whose death is comparable to that of an immediate family member

Compassionate Care Leave

You will be granted a maximum of eight weeks leave of absence under the Family Medical Leave provisions of the Employment Standards Act. With one year of service or more, you are eligible for the University Supplemental Unemployment Benefit (SUB), which pays the equivalent of the maximum possible Employment Insurance (EI) benefit during the two-week waiting period, provided you are successful in applying for EI.

Other Paid Leaves

Personal Leaves

You may request up to four days of paid personal leave each year. Personal leave may be used for a variety of circumstances, such as family emergencies, attending to legal matters, attending graduation ceremonies for your spouse or child, personal health appointments, moving, observing religious holidays or supplementing a bereavement leave.

Jury and Witness Duty

If you are called for jury duty or if you are subpoenaed as a witness (excluding arbitration), you will receive an amount equal to your lost pay for the days you would have been working. You must provide the University with certification explaining the reason for your absence.

Unpaid Leaves of Absence

Conventions and Seminars

Upon written request and approval, up to six CUPE 3261 employees may be granted an unpaid leave of absence at one time (up to 15 working days per person per year) to attend an authorized labour convention or educational seminar.
